Why is there a S position in the shift pattern along with the other 5 numbered position?

When gear selector is positioned in "s" it ensures a neutral for starting. The electrical circuit for power to from key switch to starter solinoid is wired through a mechanical limit switch which is closed only when gear selector in "s".
