Johm Deere 60

When I bought it it didn't run. And now I got it running and really don't like the way it sounds now. Doesn't seem right to me at all.

Lots and lots of reasons. Do the whole 'check compression - tune-up' thing. My '53 60 ran OK when I got it, farmed it that year, then decided to give it the 'once over'. Turns out it had a burnt exhaust valve the whole time - go figure? Remarkable machines (as are all 2cyls).

Well these don't sound like a modern engine at all. Get on utube and look up john deere 60 and see what others sound like. I didn't like the way mine sounded either but it will grow on you if ya stick with it. They sound alot different under load also. Very cool!!!

Good luck

Well, usually if it starts reasonably well and the timing and carburetion is ok, it sould run pretty well..
BUT, if the Exhaust gaskets are blown-out, it will sound pretty crappy...
If that is what it is..it may require removing the head to have that side re-machined...or it will never hold the gaskets...
Some manifolds will split and leak from a build-up of carbon and crud and need replaced..
As one person said, check the compression, check the valve tappet settings, etc..
If yours has the Dual carb, it should run pretty smooth..(even tho they only RUN half the time, anyway)..putt......putt.....putt....!!!

Is this a case where a city slicker bought an old tractor and managed to get it running and realized that a JD doesn't sound like any other tractor, or is there genuinly a problem with this tractor?

"runs like crap" is a pretty broad statement. A Harley "runs like crap" if you're used to hearing a smooth sounding crotch rocket.

Define your version of crap and maybe you'll get some help fixing the problem.

Just try to find someone in your world who knows something about two cylinder John Deere tractors and have him...or her listen to your tractor running and evaluate how well it runs. Running "like crap" is not a very discriptive term, crap can run in a variety of ways.

(quoted from post at 21:29:58 06/15/10) we thought the 60 would run better then the 420 but we realize that they both sound like crap.

Does your mommy know that you are sneaking out of bed and playing on her computer?

My suggestion would be to have someone take a video of you riding the tractor. If you have a hill, let part of the video show climbing the hill. I guarantee if you put that video in here, we can all let you know if it sounds anywhere near right.

I think he is just talking a bunch or sh*t to get everyones goat!!!

I like to way my old 60 sounds and I'm looking for a 40 in good shape if his needs a good "loving" home to go to!!
