few weeks back looked at a 1010 that was exceptional. only concern is in 3rd and 5th there seem to be some pinion or gear noise. i have heard this is commom to this model. would love to get some good advice on this.

RUN do not walk away from it unless you have a lot of $$ to spend on it. The 1010 and 2010 where both problem child's of JD and parts are high for them if you can even find the parts. Also not an easy tractor to maintain because they are not easy to work on. BTDT and have owned and worked on them. Have a 1010 parts tractor that would have cost 5 times more to fix then it was worth

The comment by old is soo right. The 1010-2010 were hard to work on, unlike the two cylinders, that were bullet proof and one could work on them standing up and use a cresant wrench and pliers.
It goes to say (all companies) made some junk at one time or other. But JD suprises me at what went out the factory door.

That said any 2010 is best avoided but..........A gasser 1010 can be almost tamed and can on occasion be considered a hobby usage machine.

With enough time and a big enough checkbook anything is possible. I know what you are saying though.
