John Deere 1020 143 loader install

Hi, I own a John Deere 1020 tractor about the tractor without the loader. I recently bought a John Deere 143 loader that I need to attach to the tractor. I have the 143 loader manual, but I am confused about where certain hydraulic lines go. I only have one auxiliary attachment in the rear help if you can thanks in advance.

One of the fellows will correct me if I'm wrong. I believe your 1020 will want to be plumbed like this 2020. This area is under the right footrest plate.

Your photo is correct for a 1020 built for sales in N America with manual or open center power steering. Tractors with closed-center steering after serial # 045,199 will have a pressure control valve mounted where the TEE fitting is attached to trans case. Tractors with PCV have FEL supply hose attached to the rear of PCV at fitting (item 4). I suggest to check the FEL control valve to be sure it's designed for closed center hyd system. This can be accomplished by attaching FEL pressure hose to tractor hyd system. Then with FEL levers in neutral position start engine & no oil should exit open FEL control valve return hose. I also recommend installing side frames before attaching FEL mounting brackets.

I’m assuming that these are the two connections that I need to put the adapters on one looks like it’s the transmission filter that I need to put the adapter on mine is not on the side as in your picture mine would be on the bottom. am I writing this assumption?

Here's the connections for the 37 loader on my 66 1020. I suppose you could weld/drill and tap the filter housing to accept the return. The housings are on eBay from time to time.

You need a filter with the port on the side or modify that one. You have the pressure control valve. You need to tee into the line going to the SCV, as in the 2030 picture I posted, not plumbing like the 2020 I posted or like Briar Hill Brittanys posted of his 1020. Tx Jim may be here with all the part numbers for the fittings and cover needed before I get a chance to look them up. There is a heavy cast filter cover (like the one you have now), and there is a lighter steel one now i believe, I haven't seen one of those yet.

OK, thanks guys. I had to order the filter part used. I could not find a new one. They’re all backordered. I found one on eBay little pricey but the new ones are pricier. I also ordered the adapters. Tx Jim likely knows off hand about the new filter cover, but I know the parts from the older cast covers swap right into the new cast covers. I expect the same may hold true for the new style covers.

According to this parts catalog the bolts should be same length for either hyd filter cover. I suggest removing to swap bolt from original filter cover to ported filter cover. Actually Jim I became aware of the optional, cheaper hyd filter cover while surfing the internet long after I left employment at JD dealership & I have no personal experience using it.

Just curious, Jim.ME, what is the problem with the way the 37 loader is connected? I've had this tractor for 14 years, and never had an issue. I even updated the 2 spool valve with a joystick, works great.

Your tractor is fine. It is an early 1020, Mtynes' 1020 is a later one. Read Tx Jim's post (#3). Your 1020, and the 2020 I first posted, don't have the pressure control valve mounted on the side of the transmission that provides oil to the steering before supplying other attachments. My 2020 uses a separate pump for the steering hydraulics and I expect yours does as well, if you have power steering. The later 1020s and 2020s didn't have the separate pump. Like the 2030 I posted, they used the pressure (priority) valve and the main hydraulic pump to supply the steering. Attachments like the SCV and loader are teed in after the PCV on those.

Your FEL hyd's are attached correctly for your tractor being a '66 below serial # 045,200 which will have open center power steering powered by a pump mounted to RH front of engine or manual steering

Right off hand, I don't remember the serial number, but I'll look it up tomorrow. My 1020 hydraulics are closed center. The only pump I can think of is the crank mounted hydraulic pump. IIRC the steering tower has a line plumbed into the hydraulic feed to the rockshaft, and another to the line feeding the pump reservoir mounted above the crank driven pump. There are no other oil fill locations other than engine oil on the block and the hydraulic fill behind the seat. I'll get the S/N tomorrow. Thanks.

Look for a little pump (no reservoir on it) hidden in behind the alternator. I am guessing it is like the 2020 and it can easily be missed. Look for 2-3 small hydraulic lines/tubes in that area. The fitting on top of the reservoir above the main pump on my 2020 has three lines to it. One small one from the main pump seal leak off and two 3/8"; one to the power steering pump and an overflow line back to a barb on the transmission shifter cover.

Open center power steering pump utilizes same hyd reservoir as the closed center hyd's for 3pt & scv's IE only 1 hyd oil fill location. Closed center steering has only 1 hyd line attached to steering control valve. To my knowledge JD didn't offer closed power steering with the Tee in that photo but installed the pressure control valve on RH side of trans case.
