How much is this 1020 worth? It's a 1968 with 1300 hours.

Is there proof the hours are original? Or is that what the tach now shows? It has had a replacement seat assembly which leads me to believe the tractor has more hours than stated. On a lower hour tractor you would replace the cushions not the whole seat. The 48 loader with the valve is worth $1250-2000 the tractor alone is worth $3000-4500 if hours are correct. The paint is not sharp and it also has a dented rear fender. It is not a bad tractor but getting top dollar would be hard in current condition. I sold a flawless 2030 gas with 2300 original hours and perfect paint a year ago for $5300 but do not think I could do that again in the current market. Tom

A 1020 with a 48 loader would be a very very handy combination. How beat up is the loader bucket? The rear tire wear does look about right for only 1300 hours if the tires are original. A person would have to check the engine, pedal wear, drawbar wear, etc. if they also indicate low hours. I would check the hydraulic oil for water, hydraulic filter and intake screen for brake pad material and the coolant for rust. I think long term moisture in the hydraulics could cause brake pad disintegration and contaminate the hydraulic system. At 45 to 50 years old, the wet sleeves in those engines could be prone to o-ring failures and pin hole leaks.

A 48 loader can easily be removed or installed in about 5 minutes if you have the parking stands. From the pictures, it looks like the front posts of the canopy are bolted or welded to the loader's towers. Would that defeat the purpose of the quick-tach loader if the canopy has to be removed before the quick-tach loader can come off?

The canopy looks a bit too low for climbing on and off the tractor comfortably. It also looks too flimsy to protect the operator in a rollover, especially without a seat belt. Is there a manufacture's label on the back of the canopy or is that just a bumper sticker? Myself, I'd pitch that canopy. The original seats were not great, but might be better than the seat it has now.

The tractor is definitely worth taking a closer look at it. Maybe bring someone along that is familiar with that era of JD utility tractors.

This tractor is in Maine. The guy who owns it bought it from the original owner 5 years ago. When he bought is the hour meter said just over 1100 hours. I'm the first year he had it the tach quit working. He figured in 5 years he didn't put 200 hours on it so it probably had less than 1300 hours on it. It comes with the loader and a wood splitter. All the guy did with it is make 1000 bales of hay or less a year and just small stuff around his house. So are you guys figuring it's worth around $5000-6000? Just curious. Thanks.

My opinion would be $4,000 to $5,000 tops to buy it, I don't think you will be able to resell it for that price in most places. The seat, non-working tachometer, age, and lack of maintenance records work against it. Without checking it over very closely, you take a risk that it could need new sleeves, or an expensive hydraulic clean out. Search the archives for comments from Tim S. Hauling it could be up to $4 per loader mile, together the combo could weigh between 7,000 to 10,000 pounds.

The best things about that combo is it is a great loader unit with a very heavy duty loader for that size tractor and it has the ability to drop the loader in only 5 minutes. That really frees up that handy little 35-40 HP tractor for other jobs.

Comparing a 45+ year old used machine to new also gives a "cost" comparison https://www.deere.com/en/tractors/utility-tractors/5-family-utility-tractors/5045e-utility-tractor/

Bought a 1020 gas, no loader, 4000 hours on the tach, 1 rear remote, rear wheel weights, new front tires and rims and some other work done for $4,000 two years ago. I am in Massachusetts.
