John Deere 1030 Oil Leaking into engine

Hello,
I have a John Deere 1030 and I was using it to blow snow on my driveway today. Oil started spewing out of the valve cover overflow hose.

I quickly parked the tractor and noticed the engine oil is over full. I believe some how that hydraulic oil is getting in there but I am not sure.

Is this a common issue?

I am a mechanic I just have no Knowledge of where to start looking? any information would be helpful.

it is common when the hydraulic pump is mounted on the engine. the oil leaks into the crankcase from the front pump seal once it starts
leaking., i dont know how the pump is on them tractors.

Your hydraulic pump is driven from the crankshaft, isn't it? I don't think there is a connection between your hydraulic system and the crankcase. I would first suspect the fuel transfer pump is leaking into the crankcase. Does the oil smell strongly of diesel and is it thin?

I agree I think diesel fuel is overfilling crankcase not hyd oil. Hydraulic system & engine have no direct connection together.

As the other poster said, it could well be diesel fuel has leaked into the crankcase, another possibility would be coolant from a failed engine oil cooler or possible head gasket leak.

To rule out coolant (ASSUMING it has been sitting without running for a while) SLOWLY loosen the engine oil drain plug 'til fluid starts dripping out, if any coolant has leaked into the crankcase it will drip out first as oil floats on water/coolant.

If no coolant, likely it's fuel from a failed left pump or injection pump shaft seal.

Correct my pump is mounted on the very front of the engine via a connecting rod/shaft type connection so I don't think the its coming from there.

I didn't smell it to be honest with you but I will.

Ok Update!

I just drained the oil because it needs and oil change anyways.

It was right full of diesel fuel!


I used the tractor yesterday about plus 1 then today its -8.

Is this something that could have froze open? or just happened overtime slowly and I just noticed it.

is there a way of telling where its coming from without tearing it apart?

I just remembered that in the summer I didn't use the tractor for about a month and it had about 1/8 tank of fuel when i parked it but was empty when i went to use it.

I would replace the transfer pump as what you have found is the common tell of them failing.

Where is the transfer pump located? I know where mechanical primer is. Do you have a part number by any chance?

From viewing 1030 parts catalog it appears both style transfer pumps sub to part # RE527115 or you might consider installing diaphragm kit

I think I will get a new pump. Thank you so much for your help. That makes sense how the seal broke and just pours fuel in the engine
