John Deere 116W baler

what can anybody tell me about the JD 116w baler, it looks odd, what kind of bales does it make, are they worth using?

They are old, 1945-1955. They need special spools of wire that are hard to find. Parts are generally unavailable.

Yes. I have 2 of them just for that but not getting them to shows anymore. One is the earlier style while the second is the later style.

At first they may look different but they were one of the BEST ever made..
The pick-up can be lifted and swung over the PTO to shrink it's size, while the shutes with the tensions actually lift off to make it super-compact..!!
They made bales just as heavy as you wanted anytime you wanted..
Many a day I watched ours punch out bales every 5 to 6 plunger strokes..all afternoon long..( Mom usually did the baling) and in later years she used a WD-45 AC on it..sometimes in 3rd gear..
Sure would make that tractor Snort..!!
When sold, I greased it up before I loaded it on the trailer for the new owner after 23 years of serious custom baling..ready to go the field..!!
For changing the bottom coils the main trick was to get the baler to stop with the needles "up", as it was tying, with only about enough wire for 1 or 2 bales left in the wire box..
You always had to turn the ends "Back" on the splice knot, or it would not hold..

I used one up until two years ago, I would still be using it but wire got too expensive. It is slow, but the bales are just as good as any wire tie baler made today.

do you use regular boxed baling wire? the same i would use in my freeman balers?

It is a lot smaller rolls, yours would make 4 for the Deere out of one of the new rolls.
