John Deere 1948 A Starter

I posted several weeks ago about my issues trying to start my 1948 John Deere A. I pulled the starter off the tractor and took the switch off. I jumped directly from a charged battery to the brass stud underneath the switch (negative) and the starter case where it bolts to the tractor frame (positive) with jumper cables. Nothing happened. I opened up the starter and the brushes were pretty worn. I assume I need to replace the brushes and the switch since it was pitted pretty badly, but do I need to do anything else? For example, is there a starter re-build kit being sold that I should look to buy or look to get the starter re-built by someone else? I appreciate all the help.

Check the inside connection of the copper stud to the field windings. May be loose or disconnected. The nut may just need tightened if not soldered. Also, the stud should not have continuity with the starters case.

Delco Remy starter. No kits, can get most parts here on Yesterdays Tractor Parts.. I would check, four brush springs? any broken wires? Check armuture segments, are they good? If so, clean off with emery paepr.. Check three bushings? Check starter drive? Replace starter switch, any dought, replace its stud, too., Clean out inside of starter housing, brush dust... Lub three bushings, four new brushs, put together.. If armuture and fields are good, should be good-to-go...

Agree with everything said except I would use sand paper instead of emery paper to clean armature. Less chance of a short.

Doug, i'm in the process of bringing up my old laptop that has the info on it for when I got my JD60 starter rebuilt. It saved a lot of headache by just letting a pro rebuild it....& I don't remember it being ridiculously priced. I failed to carry the info over to my new laptop so once I have the info I will share with you who did it, etc.

OK, the place that rebuilt my 60 starter was Fred's Auto Electric, Inc. @ 5042 Rent-Worth CT, Lincoln, NE 68516 Phone 402 423 7119 M-F 8-5:30, Sat. 8-12. It was $169.00 but that included shipping back to me in Va.

To quote Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, a man got to know his limitations, maybe I am being lazy but if you have not rebuilt a lot of starters before I would tend to have a pro do it. The cost is unusual pretty reasonable and they can bench test it for you too. Getting the starter in and out on my A was a grind, doing it once was enough, good luck with it

Doug, there are some 1108950 rebuilt starters listed on Ebay....if you do Ebay. Some give credit for core starters. Not cheap but a quick solution.
