Whats are your guys opinions when you shut one down, clutch disengaged or engaged? Gear or in neutral? And what oil do you recommend for the motor oil?

Clutch disengaged and tranny out of gear !

This way when you hop on to start it is out of gear for sure.

Whatever you favorite flavor of oil is . If you have a diesel just make sure it is diesel rated oil.

We always engaged the clutch after taking it out of gear. I have no idea why, it was just what we did. Oil was 30 weight if I recall correctly.

Take it out of gear, knuckle the clutch back in and then shut it down. That slings a little oil on the bushing. Once the engine is for sure stopped, put it in 1st or 2nd, lock both brakes.

Turn off the fuel, let it run out of gas until it quits. leave the clutch disengaged, trans in neutral. Just eliminates one more chance to forget and get hurt. On tractors with a foot clutch, it's a good idea to block the clutch pedal down to prevent a stuck clutch if it's not going to be started for several months. Stabil in the gas also prevents a lot of trouble.

On the ones without an on/off switch, transmission in neutral, engage clutch, lock down both brakes, and turn off gas at fuel bowl.

Started using 15-40W Diesel oil in all tractors about 2 years ago.

have a "B" with a push-pull switch for the dist, i still run it out of gas, while locking clutch out, and set brakes. even if some one tries to hit foot starter lever, won"t start and run off if they figure out on/off switch.

Disengaging the clutch for cold starts will eliminate quite a bit of drag on the starter motor. With the clutch "out" the first reduction gear is not spinning and also not driving the gears on the RH side of the transmission.
