John Deere 2020

Good afternoon, first post on this forum but have found Yesterdays Tractors to be an invaluable
resource. I have a John Deere 2020 with dual stage clutch and high, low lever on left side of
instrument cluster. I bought this tractor in pieces and just recently re assembled it. Tractor does
not run yet. I was pulling it onto a trailer and noticed that transmission will not spin motor in any
gear. Motor will turn by hand. It has two new clutch discs. The clutch fingers are adjusted to spec
and the throw out bearing is not touching the clutch fingers. The outer input shaft is turning but
cannot see the inner main shaft. My question is: do these tractors with the high low shift lever
need hydraulic pressure to engage drive system? Or more basically, can you pull start these
tractors? Don?t want to split it back apart if I don?t need too. Thanks in advance for any help. Matt

You cannot pull start those. If you do it will bust up the hi low unit.
sort of wondering about the 2 stage clutch and the hi low unit ? I would of thought all with the hi low came with independent pto with a lever between the shifters to turn in off and on.

Thanks Mike, there is no lever between the shifters. Hopefully the hi/low is not messed up. If the tractor was in gear and not running shouldn?t it hold and not roll? Thanks, Matt

Welcome to YT
Mike M I agree with you about tractors with hyd hi-lo not having dual stage clutch.

Disclaimer: I might be overlooking something in JD parts

CLUTCH SHAFTS AND PILOT (CONTINUOUS DRIVEN PTO) (LESS HI-LO SHIFT OR REVERSER)

I got a 1967 2020 with hilo and two stage clutch.
I agree that the tractor does not hold, and also, the park is not good. It either locks up and is totally impossible to remove, or it does not hold at all (like mine)... I do not know how to fix this?

In one word, do not trust that tractor not to move. Block it or park it on a flat spot with wheels turned uphill or implement lowered.

I am wondering if your lever on the left of the column is a reverser, not a hi/low shifter. In either case do not tow to start.

The lever on the left of the instrument cluster has a rabbit and tortoise. From the responses, it sounds like I need to get it running and go from there. If it will roll when in any other shift position except park, then apparently it is not directly connected to the engine such as a manual pickup is. Thank you for all the replies. Great forum.

The park works better if you place it in the first and fifth gear position. Deere made a park lock kit that you could add to your tractor. The left gearshift is spring loaded and there is a latch bracket that bolts to the steering colum. Tom

Since it was apart before you I wonder if it has mismatched parts ? As in if they were swapping engines and had one with a different clutch setup then the back half requires ?
One of the input shafts has to turn with the engine so as to run the transmission pump which in turn primes the front hyd. pump with oil. Might be able to crank engine over and check for oil pumping from out of the trans. pump ? I'm not sure where the "best" place is to do this on the tractor however. I'd surly have at least an I & T manual handy to read through on this.
Is yours a gas or diesel ? Gas is easier to spin over with spark plugs easily removed. Injectors are not normally too hard to remove but more of a pain.

Drop the hyd filter canister off (there will be a quart or so of oil in there) and crank the engine. If the transmission pump is working there should be flow from the filter base

(quoted from post at 09:34:39 10/31/18) TomsTractors: thanks, I?ll look into that shift lock. Seems like a good thing to have for safety

Below is the parts schematic for the gear shift lever lock that Tom referred to.
