John Deere 2040

I saw add on Facebook Marketplace for JD2040. It appears to have JD 145 loader on it. I am familiar with most JDs but not 2040. It looks quite a bit smaller than 2030.

The 2040 is smaller, it replaced the 830. It is a 3-cylinder rated at 40 PTO HP, built 1976-1982, in Mannheim, Germany. The 2030 is a 4-cylinder rated at 60 PTO HP, built 1971- 1975. Some were built in Dubuque and those with serial numbers ending in L were built in Mannheim. I believe the 2440 was the replacement for the 2030 and 2630 was the next step-up power wise. Tx Jim or others will correct this if I got it wrong.

I have an Early 2040 with open center hyd system with 145 loader. Handy tractor and dependable. Only fault I have with it is the open center hyd system.

I personally can't see the advantage of closed center hyd's vs open center hyd's on a 40 HP chore tractor. I served as a JD dealer service manager from '74-'87 during the time 2040's were sold new. IMHO if a hyd problem arises for the ordinary person not well trained in hyd diagnostic procedures open center hyd's are much easier to diagnose malfunctions than closed center.
