I have an old Sullair 185 compressor with a 219 JD. While running my sandblaster it out of the blue died. The engine temp was at 230 and i tried to start it and it was seized tight. I do not know if it was the motor or the compressor pump that locked up. The next day i hit the starter button and it turned over like normal, but i did not try start it. Is 230 getting hot enough to cause engine damage.

Coolant can get to just about any temperature as long as it stays as a liquid. trouble starts when the coolant boils and creates over heated void spaces in the engine coolant passages.
Odds are the rad fins are about 1/3 plugged with several decades of oily mud.
The fan pulley and alternator pulley will also be worn and slipping by now. A new belt and super tensioning will eliminate slippage but it will tear out the alternator and water pump bearings.
