john deere 2240 remote valve

I've got a 77 model 2240 with a remote poppet style. I also have a 2155 with the spool type valve. I'm wanting to put the poppet style on the 2155 but my only concern is the 2155 has an extra return going to the rockshaft housing that the 2240 has blocked off. I guess my question would be can I block it off on the 2155 and just return through the filter like the 2240 does. My local dealer looked like I was speaking latin when I asked for help there

Installing scv from 2240 to 2155 shouldn't be a problem. I don't understand what line is blocked off but it doesn't matter on closed-center hyd system such s these tractors have.

What would that like in the side of the rock shaft housing be going to? If it just dumps in the top of the transmission I don t really see what the problem is either. I m going to pull the plug out of the 2240 and the line off the 2155 and see where it s going to.

Thanks for the welcome. I ll look into it more tonight. It goes through a spin on filter on return also.

If you are not planning on ever running one way hydraulic functions, best to return oil to filter cap to achieve better / faster
hydraulic flow / performance. But, is you plan on using tractor / valve for one way hydraulic functions like wagon hoist with
single acting cylinder with one hose or any implement with single acting cylinder that are not very heavy like a sickle mower then
you may want to return oil to o sump using the plug in the side of rockshaft. There is pressure in filter return circuit when
returning oil to filter cap and will not effect two cylinders / functions (cylinders with two hoses) as return oil can be forced
into filter circuit. Unfortunately one way cylinders / functions may not have enough weight on them to push return oil back into
filter / charge circuit. When returning to sump there would be no return circuit restriction and is required for these one way
applications. If by chance your tractor has two valves I custom plumbed many of these with one valve to filter for fast flowing
functions and the other inside valve to sump for one way functions. Then you have the best of both worlds! To do this they make a
slug that can be purchased through service parts to separate valves. Inside valve is connected to rockshaft and outside valve
return is connected to filter cover. Hope I did not confuse anybody! DW

Rockshaft return is sump return to open case / reservoir. Filter return is "functional return" where return oil is used to
supplement / add to charge pump flow which will increase system capacity / charge flow to main hydraulic pump making a faster more
efficient system but, not the ideal setup for one way functions. See post above. DW

I m looking at it now and the 2155 doesn t return to the filter in the transmission. It goes to a low pressure line in front of the transmission on a banjo fitting. Then another goes to the rock shaft housing

The description you gave tells me this tractor is returning SCV return oil to sump. That would be the connection to the rockshaft.
Check again on the supply side / connection to remote valve and follow it back to front pump pressure circuit. Pressure supply to
remote valve should be in circuit after priority valve called out in TM as steering pressure control valve located below the
transmission dip stick area. DW

It does get the pressure from the priority valve under the floor. What I don't understand is why it has both returns. I looked through the JD parts page and found a bolt to plug the line going forward to the pump. Then I'll take my return to the filter housing like you said earlier. I'll plug the other line going to the rockshaft housing then it will be plumbed like it was on the 2240. If that don't sound right let me know. How much pressure is usually in the filter housing on the trans? When I put the spool valve on the 2240 it looks like I may have to plumb the one return to it and all the fitting on it are barbed with clamps.

] Mine is plumbed similar to the top only mine has the factory spool type valve. I want to make mine plumbed like the bottom single valve.

Top image in photo has / show two returns. one for each valve. Outer valve returns to sump / rockshaft port (through Line 29) for
one way functions, inner valve returns to filter (through line 7) for higher flow and two way functions. The plug (item 8) isolates
the two valves return circuits from each other. DW

Mine has the single spool type but still returns like this. My one doesn t go to the trans filter but to a spin on and then to the hyd pump supply line.

In photos below appears to be type hyd scv return oil your 2155 should have. I've never personally witnessed that setup but I left JD dealership just about the same time 55 series tractors were introduced. I agree with DW to convert return oil to one style for all spool bodies one should need to remove a plug on return oil galley between the spool valve bodies BUT I couldn't locate this conversion plug in parts catalog. All I can locate between spool valve housings is o-rings(key 4)
