John Deere 2520

My 1969 John Deere 2520 has been my favorite and most dependable tractor on the farm. It the only tractor my wife will drive. The last two days that Ive been using the tractor a problem has arose. I used the tractor for about 40 minutes and then turn the tractor off. Five minutes later I tried to start it and it just turns over and will not start. 30 minutes of cool down and it will start. This happened two days in a row. Its a diesel. Where or what do I start troubleshooting? Never had this problem. Thank you for your help. Have a great day. Al

That is the classic symptom of a worn ''head and rotor in the injection pump. If you happen to still have winter/#1 diesel fuel in it the ''no hot start'' issue may be even more pronounced.

(quoted from post at 20:52:21 06/12/23) Wore out has the answer. Dad had a 2240 like that and he would dump cold water on the injection pump then it would start right up. Tom

Just to be clear, NEVER pour water on the I.P. while the engine is running or while cranking it.

If you want to try the that method of seeing if it will start when cooled down a bit, pour cold water over the pump, and wait a couple of minutes before cranking it.

A SUDDEN, dramatic temperature change while the pump's internals are moving can cause them to seize and break parts doing more damage to the injection pump.

Thanks for posting that wore out. I should have went into a little more detail in my answer. The cold water
trick is a good way to determine if it is for sure a worn head and rotor and also will keep you going untill
you can get your pump fixed. Tom
