John Deere 2555 Loader Seems Slow

I’ve got a John Deere 2555 with 146 loader and factory fender mount joystick and valve combo. The tractor has the 23gpm hydraulic pump. Compared to my 2030 and 2630, both of which have the exact same set up, this loader just seems sluggish. The joy stick on my 2555 when pulling back to raise the loader has two positions. The first is slow and will lift anything. Pull back slightly more and it almost feels like a detent, but the loader will raise quickly. More like the 2030 and 2630. However, with a bale of hay on, the loader is unresponsive when, what I call detent, is engaged. Tilt action is also slow. No detent in those positions.

The 2030 and 2630 do not detent like this valve does. Hydraulics are very smooth with no issues. Loader just seems slow… 3pt is very quick… Tractor has been fully serviced… new filter and suction screen.

Adjustment anywhere on the valve body to increase flow? Suggestions?

Is FEL control valve attached directly to tractor hyd system IE not attached to rear breakaway couplers. I suggest to check hyd stand-by pressure & set it a 2350 psi if not already at that psi

Some questions;how long have you had the tractor, when did the problem start, how is the loader plumbed to tractor?Standby pressure at remotes?

That sounds like at least partly linkage or cable troubles, if the info Tx Jim is asking about checks out ok. Look and see if something is slipping when the detent is felt.

The 146 was used on a number of tractors with different valve arrangements. I have a 146 (also 145s and 148) and all the valves are mounted on the right side upright with the handles on the valves, no cables. I have never felt a detent on the lift or bucket other than the float detent on the lift spools. I think more info is needed on your valve arrangement to get info that applies to you set up not all the different setups.

Loader is tied directly into the Hydraulic system. I have had the tractor for about three months. The original owner passed away and the tractor had been sitting for several years. 1900 real hours.

If the 2555, 2030 and 2630 are all four cylinder tractors are their frame lengths close enough to move the 146 loader in question to one of the other tractors? If the problem stays with the loader you can look at the loader for the problem. If the problem goes away on the new tractor you can narrow your diagnosis to the 2555 tractor.

That is a lot of work, but is something to consider if the problem cannot be solved.

I agree model 146 will fit many JD utility tractor models BUT before considering relocating the loader to a different older model JD tractor I would recommend to diagnose & repair what the hyd problem is that is causing boom to operate slower on the 2355.

Open station 2555 is much easier for operator to enter/exit operators station than older model open station JD utility tractors due to gearshift & independent pto control levers being relocated further forward on tractor operator platform.

If tractor stand-by pressure is lower than spec's or FEL spool valve has a an internal leak such as a relief valve if present not set to high enough pressure can cause slow FEL operation.

Maybe a dumb response, but are the hoses from the cylinders connected to the right valve ports on the valve body? Should be a detent forward on the boom control....float...and a detent on the dump function for quick dumps. That's how mine operated, identical valve control and loader as yours.

Where the oil returns into the tractor from the loader valve is important.

ss55, I’m not sure of your theory here? Given a certain amount of fluid flow For a cylinders internals to have a notable affect the extension or retraction speed that would require fluid to leak by the ram piston. If fluid leaks by enough to noticeably change the ram movement speed the cylinder would almost certainly drop down very quickly when it was raised and intended to hold a position. I don’t see the OP reporting any reaction like that. I suppose there could be a possibility that a ram piston could leak by only when it is moving but this would be a rare condition I have never heard of. Essentially I am saying your suggestion would be a waste of time for the OP.
If really stumped once all the other diagnosis recommended here is checked out you could park the tractors next to each other. Buy some hoses that could be replacement hoses in the future. Then cross connect the hydraulics from one tractor to the loader on the other and cycle the loader on one tractor with the hydraulics of the other. This to me would seem more feasible than your suggestion.
