John Deere 2640

Does anyone know if a JD 2640 uses a common hyd system? I found the hydraulic dipstick lurking behind one of the pedals and it reads full.
However, I hear some grinding noise coming from the rear end. I know the fill cap is in the rear of the tractor. I don't know if there's
another place to put hyd oil.

Dipstick for the common sump (transmission, differential, wet brakes and hydraulics) is in the right side of the transmission case near the rear of the right running board. You check it with the dipstick setting on the tube, not threaded down on the tube.

This info is in the Operator's Manual. Do you have one? If not, you can download one for free at the JD Ag and Turf technical info site, click this link: https://techpubs.deere.com/ . Click on Equipment Publications. Do a search for 2640. Several will come up You want Tractors, Base Units. There are 2 manuals based on serial numbers (the manual is in several languages under each serial number) pick your serial number and you should be able to select the right operator's manual and download/save it to your computer, then you can print it if you want.

What are you using for fluid/oil in it?

When was the transmission last drained and the suction screen checked? Your brakes may be on the way out, they are in the axle housing right at the sides of the differential.

Adding to Jim's information, have engine running at idle when you check hydraulic oil level as he correctly explained. DW

I have one setting at my place with metal to metal brakes. Had plugged screen and cream oil. Trying to get guy to get it out of here.

That's the only place in which to add oil. Common sump for trans, differential and all hydraulic functions. Hydraulic pump is under the rad, filter and prefilter screen are under the differential housing

Thank you folks. I had replaced the hdy pump on this for my neighbor not more than 6 months ago (heavy little bugger that pump). Now, he lent it out to a bonehead who said the hydraulics were working slow and seemed to be some strange noise coming from the rearend. When I went to look at it and pulled the dipstick, oil gushed out like an oil well. (kind of overfilled I'm guessing) He then told me he had put 15 gallons in it. However, he didn't know about the dipstick. (moron... tried to tell the owner this is what happens when you lend out your stuff). As far as I know, he was using Cam 2 promax premium AW 46 oil.
Now, I'm worried he may have damaged the tractor a bunch.

I believe Cam 2 promax premium AW 46 oil is the wrong oil to be using in a 2640. I don't see a thing in the linked technical sheet that says that is good for wet brakes or that it meets the John Deere spec for transmission hydraulic fluid. A 2640 should have John Deere Hy Gard or a UTHF meeting JDM J20C. That tractor has wet brakes and needs an oil formulated for them. The Cam oil is just a hydraulic oil as I read it.

From the 2640 Operator's Manual.

The problem may have surfaced when loaned out, but may have started with the wrong oil. I would drain the oil completely, check the sump screen and change the transmission filter. Look for silver trails in the oils as it drains, see what is on the screen, see what is in the bottom of the filter housing, and cut the filter open to see what it has caught. You may get some indications from those things. Silver colored stuff here is not a sign of striking it rich.

The front pump is often replaced. However the problem 98% of the time the pump is ok, the transmission system is not pushing oil up to the front pump.
The front pump will not lift oil from the transmission sump. The front pump needs oil supplied to it under low pressure .
It would appear that neither the operator's manual nor the service manual has been consulted with this tractor.
This would be the time to tell your neighbour that all bets are off with this tractor, you are not liable and that it will probably cost more to repair than what it is worth.

That's kind of what I figured. I suspected that not only was the wrong hyd oil used, but there are other more serious problems. Either way, I'm running away as fast as I can. LOL

I forgot to mention. The hyd pump had seized up which is why I was hired to replace it. Now I suspect the transmission pump may have been the originator of the problem.

There is a possibility that the hydraulic oil that was used . It lacks the properties to protect and lubricate high stress metal to metal contact points . Which caused the pump components to fall and seize.
The owners lack of care, not following the operators manual and using the wrong oil . The saving of $200 has possibly wrote off a $7500 tractor .
