I am having trouble with a, "new to me" John Deere 290 planter. I am trying to plant sweet corn with it. The issue is, when I raise the planter bottoms at the end of the row (or during transport), the seed valve shafts continue to turn and deliver seed. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? thank you,

Isn't there a rod that pushes or pulls a lever on the gear box? It's been decades since I had a 490.

Yes, according to the manual, there is an adjustment, when the planter is lifted the rock shaft is supposed to operate a clutch, stopping the seed flow, I don't understand where clutch is, In the gearbox??

If memory serves me right, yes. It's been about 5 decades since I had one though. Try taking the chain off and moving that lever and see if you can get it where you can turn the sprocket without it turning the shaft. I'm thinking the shaft might turn inside the sprocket. The sprocket isn't seized to the shaft somehow with rust or old grease is it?

I think that might be a possibility, thanks Randy, I am still planning on meeting you one of these days, we have spoke before, I am in Clare

I'll be at Blanchard,Oakley and McBride at the shows this year. Look forward to meeting you.
