John Deere 30 Ejector

Hello.

My number 30 ejector works fine if I have
the dial set at 4 to 5 or higher. But when
I want to decrease the distance to load
the front of a wagon it has problems.
The arms will extend but they will not
retract. Any idea what I need to look
for?

Dirty detent pieces under cap on valve or broken spring inside the cylinder.

Or worn out pump.

Don't think the pump is worn out if he can load the back of the wagon.

Thank you for the input. I don't have a lot of hay left to do so I don't know if I want to take my cylinder apart now, but I do keep the detent pieces clean under that cap so I don't think that's the problem.

When it is waving at you and not returning home either the valve is not tripping back to neutral letting the oil return to tank, or the spring is not able to throw it back. The cylinder is just a simple one way cylinder, but has the spring inside the housing.

Good point. Depends on the weight of the bale and the length of the wagon. My kicker would throw the occasional 45 pound bale to the back of a half-filled 18 foot wagon,but acted like the OP's at lower settings. When I replaced the pump it shot bales over the back if I wasn't careful, and the front loaded normally.

Just some preliminary checks what is the condition of the belts on the side? Is the tension set properly? Also are the arms coming back at all or just staying fully extended. If they are coming back and just not latching there could be some other issues going on than what listed above but from what you explained it sound like the spring internal in the cylinder has failed.

Thank you for the reply. The belts seem good, and the tray does not wave at me, it stays extended.

I will be using it on Friday and will take a closer look at everything. I know if I put the dial on 8 it would throw the bales on the ground behind the wagon. Can't remember if the wagon is 16 or 18 feet.

I like your plan. Make hay while the sun shines, and get the baler working properly after the baling is done. I had the same plan. Unfortunately, in my case, when the baling was done, fixing the baler was no longer a top priority.

The service manual can be had used online for less than $20 including shipping (cheap) but I didn't find it all that helpful. A thorough pump test is complex, to say the least. For your situation, it does suggest a readjustment between control arm cam and trip bar roller.

When I replaced the pump I changed the oil, there were a lot of aluminum filings in there.
