Hi all,
I bought a John Deere 3140 MFWD, and I was told it had a bit of noise, maybe valve adjustment necessary. I have bought a lot of tractors from him, and he has been great to deal with. I went to check it out and it wouldn't run, or even turn over. It had been running a couple months previously and the exhaust has been covered. I worked the flywheel back and forth a bit and freed it up. Got it running and it sounded awful, terrible knocking. Sounded like a broken conrod. Ran it for a few minutes, it was quiet for a bit of time, then knocking again. Just before I shut it off it started screeching...I made a deal and bought it AIWI.

Fast forward a couple weeks today I pulled the sump and this is what I found...

Obviously a conrod bolt snapped, allowing the bearings to stack, locking up the engine.
This is the crank journal...

Has anyone else had this happen before? Why would this have happened? The local wrecker has any parts I will need, crank, rod etc.
Overall the tractor is in good condition (despite the bald tyres!), and the parts wont cost much, but there will be a huge amount of labor involved which I will be doing.
Is it possible to remove the crankshaft only splitting at the clutch? Can enough things be removed ie: radiator, timing cover etc so I don't have to split the front axle off as well?
Thanks in advance,
Joshua
