My JD 316 dies when i turn on the pto switch, just started mowing the yard and it died so i shut off the switch and it started right back up but now when i flip the switch it dies, any ideas?

It could also be a bad magenet coil in the PTO clutch. Dad way talking yesterday that he was having the same problem with his JD 317.

I've had that happen twice on my tractors. It had a cut on the shielding of the wire running up to the pto clutch both times. Follow that wire along the frame rail and you should unground it. It makes a direct and major short to ground killing the engine as soon as you throw the pto switch. It's acting like your clutch went bad and is grounding out which I've yet to have happen.
