P218 onan engine. Hard to start. I put check valves in fuel lines..cleaned carb. I restored this. It runs great but very hard to start. Put new fuel pump on..new lines..still hard to start. It has no points..help?

Did you remove the two "dip tubes" from the gas tank and have a look at 'em?

If you didn't you'll be surprised at what all is involved there once you have a look.

As long as you were replacing the fuel pump you should have tossed that stupid crankcase pulse operated thing and put a low pressure electric pump on it

I have a 322 and a 400 that came with electric fuel pumps, and I've updated one of my 318's to an electric fuel pump.

Sure saves on the starter!

Can you give us so more info on the low pressure pump? Is it from John Deere or who?
Does it go in the tank or external? Where do you connect to wiring?

External pump, lots of sources for a low pressure fuel pump, even NAPA has 'em.

The 322 uses a DEERE AM876265 pump, DEERE wants well over a hundred $$$ for them, Check on the 'net, ebay for example, and you will find imported substitutes for $12 and up, shipped, and I've had hood luck with 'em, at least so far!

Power from a terminal on the ignition switch that's "hot" in run and start. IIRC, there's a loose yellow wire pigtail with connector behind the "dash" that can be used. I use an in-line fuseholder with a small fuse, 5 or 7.5 Amp, just in case!

(Automotive electric fuel pumps typically use an oil pressure switch, or other means to shut them off if the engine stalls. The 322 and the 400 weren't set up that way and run as long as the ignition switch is "ON", so be aware of that option.)

Here's what the imported pumps look like, similar to the OEM pump used on the 322:

put all new lines in tank as well as check valves..no difference in starting. Gonna check valve clearance..but i doubt this would cause this. My next step is a electric fuel pump..if this dont fix it..im sticking a kawasaki in it..ged up with onans.

valve lash is not the problem either..so thanks for.making me tear it all down and checking it. I dont know where the fuel goes when i shut it off..but it goes somewhere. I put check valves in both lines in tank. It dont go into crankcase either..cause this engine uses about a pint of oil a month. Im lost the cause. Fuel pump pumps great. No sense in having an elevtric one. I guess its an onan..typical hard starting engines.

here is my restored 318. Bought it for 300.00. Still hard to start..next step is an electric fuel pump. She runs great once its started.. crank the damn thing 27 revs. Before it fires.
