John Deere 34 spreader

I bought this spreader for a friend, he has yet to
come get it, so after sitting here for 2 months I
decided to load it up with some beef manure, drive
down to the farm to spread it on the hay fields, great
day here in NY for doing anything outside.

First thing I don't like is the ratchet drive vs a gear
box, second the beater dosent seem to spread as
good as my NH and knight, maybe its the mud like
heavy manure, but it works and it's going down the
road. My question is the rope on the front I'm
guessing changes the apron chain speed, but it
seems like this one only goes one way a d does not
return? I took the shield off and moved it back to
we're it was, any ideas on how it works, could a
spring be missing?

Dad & Grampa had 2 33's and one 34. None lasted more than 2 years of every day use on the dairy. The first New Holland lasted 8 years for us and 4 more for a neighbor.

The beater on that spreader was an option for loose manure or wet sloppy manure like semi-liquid hog manure. It came with a rubber flap in the lower front and a trap door in the lower rear.

That beater does not work the best with hard packed cattle manure, it does not tear and throw nearly as well as the other beater options. Run the web at a slower speed or don't fill the spreader completely full with hard packed material.

Last week there was a post and answers about the web speeds.

If I remember right, that spreader should have two pull ropes: one rope to open the trap door in the back and one rope to change the web speeds. Open the front panel to check which one is missing.

I have a JD 40, which is a larger version, and it isn't near what a New Idea is. I gets the job done, but that's about it.

Jay the front speed control is a lever that has a ratchet like latch on the bottom. When you pull the rope the lever will latch in different notches. The further forward the lever the longer it lets the REAR linkage ratchet so the faster the floor chain moves. The return spring is on the back linkage, #19, that hooks into , which is a cotter pin in the rear control rod.#14,. It pulls back on the front control rod,#2. If the spring is broken or the linkage stuck the front control lever will not return. The ratcheting drive is simple if you keep all the locks and springs free and working correctly. #14 in the front picture is an indicator that sticks out the front of the shield. The holes are for you to know which notch your in on the lever.

First picture is the front and the second is the back.
