Refurbishing a 37 JD sickle. Numerous parts were missing. Having a problem installing the pitman arm. Mainly the spring release Z 7327H. What does it do, and is it nessesary? It looks like the
spring release fits into a tab on the Fork,Latch P 47370. My Fork does not have this tab. Parts were from Deere. Thanks for the help.

You must not have an "Operator's Manual"?

I quote: "To remove pitman from knife: Insert a punch through the slot in the flat spring and into yoke plunger. Force yoke plunger (what you are calling a "fork, latch") back (against the coil spring in the "wood") and force the flat spring down between the straps to separate them, releasing the ball on the knife head."

I dunno when DEERE omitted the little "tab" you are missing, (the part number seems to not have changed) they had a little drilled depression in the tab to catch the tip of the punch, making it easier to catch on the "latch" with the tip of the punch.

ENNYWHO, the missing tab was NOT intended to fit into the slot in the spring strap above it, and now you know what the slot is to be used for.
