John Deere 40 Combine

I recently purchased a 730 LP wide front from a fellow a few counties over from me, anyway I noticed another tractor in his shed that I couldn't quite recognize, its a John Deere 40 Combine that was in original, and imaculate condition. He said his dad bought it new and it hardly got used over the years. Very nice old tractor, he wants 2k for it. Out of all the tractors I've bought over the years I've never seen a JD 40 combine, are they common?

When did a combine become a tractor?

JD 40 combine small self propelled made 1960-65 for small farms. Probably not common in large acreage areas and never seen in our area. 40 bushel bin, HA115G engine, 8-10 ft. head, 20x26 cylinder, $5465 new back then. I wouldn't give 2K for it today or half that. Same combine was a PTO pull type called a 42 with 9 ft. head made 1961-66. Two cylinder magazine did articles on it and may have back issues yet?

I had a round back that I used,got a square back with it for parts. Got rid of both several years ago. I had a 42 as well. It was pretty much a pull type 40. Inards were pretty much the same,eight and a half foot cut,slightly offset to make room for the tongue. PTO driven. Sold that this past summer. So yea,that size combine was quite common around here,although not quite as common as the 45.

There are not many of these around, and even fewer in great condition. If I wanted a good small combine to play with that not everyone else had, I would buy it. Two thousand I suspect is today's limit, so don't buy it and expect to turn a profit tomorrow. I have heard of several large JD fanatical farmers would love to have one as a toy and they wouldn't have any problem giving $2K for one in immaculate condition. As you probably already know, it is usually cheaper and a lot easier to buy something already in good condition rather than rebuild a marginal machine.

There were quite a few 40 JD combines sold new in my area and several are still around yet.Got a friend that cuts a little fescue seed every year with his 40.

$2000 is pretty steep for a 40 but if its immaculate,it might bring that.Common ones go for $500-$1000.

Thats why there called a combine. There a tractor COMBINED with a thresher

Actually a threshing machine combined with a header. Don't believe it had any thing to do with being part of a tractor. A header was a horse pushed machine that cut the grain and put it onto a wagon. Still while the front attachments for a combine are sometimes called a header.
