John Deere 40 Friction Discs

The throttle on my 40U wouldn't stay where I put it, so I bought the friction discs to tighen it up. Now, however, the question is where in the heck do they go and how to I get them there? Thanks guys...I feel like an idiot!

Do you have a parts list ort a shop manual ? IF NOT get it from jdparts.com. But, you have to make a username and password. Its free also. Here is the link. Enter your model number in the Search by Model number. You are not downloading the file. Just make a copy of it to your desktop. It's file number 862.

I don't think you need to be a registered user to open and then save their .pdf parts catalogs, just to get pricing and dealer inventory information.

One is on the outside of the dash inside of the throttle lever, and the other on the inside, spring loaded against the dash. The parts book makes it pretty clear as to how to get to it.

Put penetrating oil on the spring pin which holds the throttle lever
to the shaft for about two weeks before you try to drive that pin
out.

While you're waiting, go buy a punch made specifically for
that pin.

Don't plan to complete this job in 40 minutes.

The tough part on a 40 is removing the throttle handle from the throttle shaft. There is a small roll pin that must be driven out securing the handle to the shaft. It can be stubborn/difficult to remove after being there for 50+ years. Even then the lever is not always easy to remove from the shaft. . . part of the throttle handle fits into the dash and it will not just fall out. It is sometimes easier to remove the end of the throttle shaft (via its bracket) where it attaches to the top of the water manifold on top of the head, from there you can work the whole piece like a slide hammer to get the handle off. Look over the pieces close and you may get the idea of what you are up against.
