John Deere 40 questions

I scooped up a deal on a JD40 today. Ive never owned a 40, so I have a few questions for the experts. I hope the photos will load correctly. Which 40 is this and what year? The serial number chart I viewed shows numbers beginning with 6001 for three years so Im confused. My tag only states 40 with no suffix. I think its a W but not positive. Also the left wheel is stuck. Im assuming its the brake since it sat for 3 years without being used before I got it. Any idea where to begin there? I need a manual for sure.

This link to the JD online parts manual may be helpful..

(quoted from post at 20:34:15 11/19/21) Its a. T with a wide front. Appears to be a 1953+
Would you mind sharing how you are able to determine this? Did someone add the wide front? There is a 40T at a local tractor salvage yard with a tricycle front and the tag is marked 40 Im including pictures of the junk yard 40T for reference. Im not doubting you, just trying to learn.

Take a look at the photo below of [b:654c4848f0]BW[/b:654c4848f0] our 1954 Model 40T.

Your tractor is a 1953 Model 40T.

Hope this helps.

(quoted from post at 06:00:28 11/20/21) It is a T with a wide front out of a 420 or 430 W.

That explains why it looks so much like a 420 or 430 to me. We had a 430 for a while when I was a teenager. I worked on it a fair bit when my Dad first bought it.

I like the wide front. I live on a hill so most all of the 10 acres is sloped. The thought of a tricycle front on anything other than straight up or down a slope scares me.

Does anyone have any tips on the stuck left rear wheel? I'm assuming it's a stuck brake. Had to drag it on and off the trailer and the wheel never budged.

The parts that make the rear a T are the reduction gear housings. They are slanted downward at approx 45 deg from the center line of the tractor. Just looked in parts book, the Tricycle is the only version to use that final drive housing. The front axle is later part, very desirable. FYI--each version of the model 40 had a serial number sequence that started with 60000. I have seen other 40T without the T by model and all other versions were marked on tag with version.

Had me fooled at first . Tricycle T chassis with a row crop utility front axle .
Replacement two rib fenders can be ordered from the aftermarket .
iirc a PTO shield will bolt on .
Replacement battery covers from the aftermarket too iirc .

(quoted from post at 08:11:44 11/20/21) Here is a pic of my 40T for reference, not that it is perfect as it has a few upgrades for sure.

I came across that very photo while looking for 40T examples.
That is a great looking tractor! You chose a perfect opportunity to take that shot.

You might consider removing the brake assembly.

Try to rotate the rear wheel to determine if it is stuck.

If the rear wheel rotates, then clean all parts of the brake assembly.

Did all 40Ts come with fenders? I did get the battery box or at least part of it.

Good find on the battery box .
I ordered a PTO shield for a 420 T and it bolted onto our 40T .
Waterloo fenders will bolt onto a Dubuque . However they appear a little odd because they are taller .

Would you have any pictures of the PTO shield?
