John Deere 40 Serial Number Tag

I have a John Deere 40. And on the serial number tag where it gives the the model,it just reads 40.
I have a 40 wide and a 40 standard and they read 40w and 40s.Can any one help me out.

The 40s is a standerd. The 40w is a two row utility. It is a low profile tractor with a wide adjustable front axel. It was made only one year, that being 1955.

Typically a "plain 40" tag would have been found on the Tricycle tractors. Had a couple of 40T tractors that were the same way. May have stamped the "T" on later in production, but I know earlier ones were without. Standards (S) and Two Row Utilitys (W) would have had the letter after the number. Same for a Utility (U) Crawler (C) HighCrop (H) or Special (V).

Less then 1800 40W made ,but for some strange reason they sell for less then the more common models at times. Baffles me ? I also have a 40W mine has 34" rear tires.but many have 28"
