John Deere 4000 / 4020 differences

What are the differences between a 4000 and a 4020? I know that the 4000 is the economy version of the 4020. Per my knowlage the 4000 only had one SRV and one battery even thou alot of people added a second one of each on. I have also heard that it has a lighter rear axel, maybe a 3020 axel? Thanks

The 4000 used a 3020 3 point hitch lower arms.It has it's own rear end that is different from a 4020 but is not a 3020.The tach was different and there was no sheet metal around the seat. They had two batteries but the box was a frame work that exposed the side of the battery.I do not think a front pto was available(but I could be wrong).I always thought than had a little more snap than a 4020 but the parts books shows same engine and injection pump.Dual outlets was an option but many have single as people who bought 4000's were trying to save money. The dealer in my area sold lots of them as the dairymen were starting to switch to haylage and needed more pto power. He traded lots of 3020 gassers on 4000's as the farmers would keep their old equipment and pull it faster.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 4000 called a "runner" since it could pull the same as the 4020 but was much lighter?

They were made to replace a 3020 pulling the same
old equipment faster allowing the farmer to get
more work done without having to buy all new
implements

If I'm not mistaken, the sycronizers for reverse were not included in the 4000's transmission, too.

Oddly, enough, though by the end of 4000 production most 4020 options were available on the 4000... including power shift and the Hinson cab.

Couple more things to add to Toms reply. They had no 1000RPM shaft but one could be added. The 69/70 all had one outlet and no diff lock. The wheels were a lighhter cast. They were about 10% cheaper[ $800] about[ 600 #?] lighter as the axles were 3 1/8.The transmission was not sygronized. My info states 8095 made with 412 being powershifts.Almost all options including HFWA cab, heavy castwheels, powershift were all available.I know of 6 of 9 of the 4000 gas P.S. are and a diesel HFWA P.S.w/ Factory Hinsen cab Some people have never heard of them. They bring about the same as 2520/4320.

I went on a Waterloo tour last Feb...the tour guide did not know that JD made a 4000. I remember them being advertised as a runner, pulling smaller equipment than the 4020, but faster.

Sounds as if Tom,Connie & Larry covered everything that I can think of as far as differences. Battery holders for 4000 are shown below.

Here is the final and definitive answer. The 3020 rear end story tellers need their rear ends kicked.

Mike,I think they were available in late 70 but my expert seemed to think not.The scv is easily added but diff had to come from factory.I have sold several 4000s and I really think they are unique as you don't see that many.I have seen a legit 1971 4020s with low manifold by starter and two 4320 with wrong factory cab and don't have an explanation unless dealer installed.50 years is a long time since they were new.

larryanderson , A few weeks ago at a farm auction in ohio they sold a 4000 with 2800 original hours. It needed the side screens,JD hood emblems, seat, but had good original paint and ran well. It brought 8800. Is that about the market?

Ray the key word is gas or diesel also year and equiptment.I know of a 3600 hour 1970 that is a total original and very nice has about $1000 worth of weights and has fenders but is equipted with a GT-1 cab that is nice asking price $17K .If it was a gas then probably about right or a little high .A nice original would not have much wear and emblems usually don't come off in 2800 hours. The black tach was on all 4000s.Gases just don't sell well.

From what I have read, the 4000 and 4020 are nearly identical from the clutch forward. From there toward the back is where the differences are. The 4000 uses the same draft links as the 3020, but the rear end is more like a 4010 than a 3020. The axles are also same as a 4010, which is smaller than a 4020. The bracket that holds the seat suspension is also different. The 4000 bracket doesn't have the extended pieces that the rockshaft covers bolt to (due to no covers)--although open station 4000s have a partial sheet metal panel that covers alongside the right hand side of the rockshaft valve.

Unlike the later 4020 tach that uses fiberoptic lighting, the 4000 tach and guages are not lit and utilize a dash light similar to the pre 1969 4020s. Looking at mine, I found it odd because that light bolts thru the rubber around the steering column, which looks like a total afterthought to me.

I also had a guy tell me that the front wheel hubs on 4000s were elongated compared to the later style 4020 hubs. Didn't get all the details whether that was all years or just 72, but I remember that he remarked that mine had the right hubs.

I see not mention in parts catalog of 4000 having "special frt hubs".

Ray,that was a good buy.Hard to find nice low houred original side counsel tractors for under $10K.Again tires,#of outlets, weights and year make a difference. The missing emblems, seat, and screens aren't a big deal and really hurts sale.I was at a sale where the side screens, third link, and side shields were in with rack items. The auctioneer should have known they needed to be on tractor. He sold side shields and screens one at a time. choice
