John Deere 4010 24 volt electrical problem

I blew out part of the + post on one battery, probably the connection was loose. Now I get no
power to the starter.

The batteries test ok. The wiring is old but I didnt spot any problems during a cursory visual
inspection. My electrical aptitude with a multimeter pretty much starts and ends with a battery
check.

Any steps for trouble shooting? I am thinking of taking the starter and solenoid in for testing.
Any trouble shooting steps I can do before I start taking parts off the tractor for testing?

Grab a voltmeter and put it's (-) lead on the top starter solenoid terminal and the (+) lead to the battery cable stud in the starter ''belly'' on the engine side.

There should be 24 Volts (nominal) across those terminals.

If NOT, you need to troubleshoot to find out why not and correct the cause.

If 24 Volts there, have a helper try to start the tractor while you monitor the voltage between those two points and report back.

Ditto what wore out stated. My guess is faulty battery cable connection or faulty battery cable. It's also possible neutral start switch isn't making connection IE no continuity.

Obviously the starter cant crank until 24 volts is applied, so before removing starter or solenoid to have them checked insure 24 VDC is available at the solenoid as wore out posted. If EITHER battery or more likely a bad cable or connection is the fault no cranking. Remember the 24 volts is the SUM OF YOUR TWO 12 VOLT BATTERIES IN SERIES so BOTH and all connections (the two batteries in series) cables and terminals need to be okay. A DC voltmeter looking for 12 and 24 volts is needed for troubleshooting..

Make sure the shift lever is pushing the starter safety switch closed and make sure those wire connections are on the switch tightly. Ive had them come loose as I mess with other wires.
