John Deere 4010 starting issues

I have a John Deere 4010 with a 4020 diesel engine that was converted to a 12 volt system. Had issues with it starting period bot figured out I had some grounding issues,a starter problem all of which were fixed. Have went about a year with no starting problems. Just this past week it starts but if I run it a while and shut it off and then try to start again it turns over slowly a couple of times and that is it. Check voltage on batteries shows 12.8 each. Let it set maybe an hour will whirl over and start. Alternator is charging between 13.9 to 14.2 volts. I am at a complete loss what to troubleshoot or replace to fix the problem ant ideas appreciated. Could one of the batteries have an internal problem causing this issue. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Simple trouble shooting. Battery cables, size, clean, tight? Neutral start circuit.? Starter solenoid? The starter itself? You say batteries and charging are OK?

Load test the batteries and make sure all connections are "good" so they are both contributing their full share of cranking current.

Check the battery voltage at the posts of each battery, while cranking, the voltage on the batteries with no load is all but meaningless.

On the other hand, there MAY be an issue with the starter where it "drags" or is otherwise "not up to par" during warmed up cranking.

I agree with wore out that batteries should be load tested. While engaging starter rapidly rotate steering wheel from side to side. Motion of steering wheel helps relieve hyd pressure causing hyd pump shaft to be easier to rotate. Another option is using hyd pump destroking screw during engine starter engagement.

I would pull that starter and have it checked. I agree that it sounds like its dragging when hot
