does not want to go into park anymore. when you put it into certain gears it will sit there for a few seconds and then sl,owly engage, whats going on?
 
"Park" is operated by a cable. Likely, yours is sticky/rusty/worn/out of adjustment.

As to the gear engagement delay, when is the last time filters were changed, and has the sump screen been checked/cleaned in the last 20 years?

The "quickness" of the shift engagements is adjustable by a screw in the valve body.

Also, they typically shift similar to what you wrote in the upper 2 or 3 speeds.

My 4020 power shift did the same thing. The cable was bad and also the arm on the side of transmission case was worn and roll pin was sloppy. Replaced cable, arm and roll pin and was like new. John
