John Deere 4020

I recently purchased a 1964 4020 Diesel, Power Shift, Dual remotes, wide front. I was wonder two things. #1 Is the primary drive clutch (on the flywheel of engine) a wet clutch or a dry clutch? #2 I have no power steering to the left. Will steer right just fine but will not turn left. turning left the steering wheel is hard and dose not move. I have to use the loader and lift the wheels off the ground to turn the wheels to the left. There is still no power steering to the left with the wheels off the ground- turns hard. In order to repair this will the column valve need to be rebuilt? or is there some kind of adjustment?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you,
jeff

THE engine clutch is dry, the steer valve needs rebuilt, if you want to send it to me I can fix it for you..mail me for more info

Yes there are adjustments but you have to take the
steering valve apart to get to them. There are
what resembles rocker-arms with threaded adjusters
to open the hydraulic spools to make it turn left
or right.

Here's the parts schematics for the steering valve

Yes, what has happened is your adjustments may have worked loose a bit or the levers worn enough to put them out of adjustment, you need a set up tool and dial indicator to set them up, and I would tear it clear down clean and inspect it, then go back together with new o-rings and set up. I have a way to bench test them here in my shop, if your interested you can ship your valve to me and I can take care of it for you, $250 labor and about $100 for parts..

It is a dry clutch, but it isn't connected to the clutch pedal. On a powershift, it is connected to the lever on the left of the dash. The "clutch pedal" is referred to as an inching pedal. It is connected to a hydraulic valve that controls oil pressure to the trans.

Thank you for the responses. I was thinking both 4020s were dry clutches. Reason for asking is i peeked in side of the timing hole and it appeared to be damp in my clutch housing, rear main leak? I do not know how many hours are on this tractor but I know it is quite a few. The power shift linkages are very worn, kind of hard to tell the detents between gears and it like to creep in park. Going to need a whole shift leaver assembly- just too worn to repair.

I have not decided yet weather the tractor is worth rebuilding. it has a lot of wear and damage that needs to be address and am going to dig in to it before making a decision weather to repair/keep/restore or part out

Tim: I got a manual coming for this tractor and am going to look in to it and see if I can repair it my self at this time. I am a service technician for industrial equipment and been working on older tractors my whole life so this my not be as bad as I keep hearing. If it ends up being something i do not want to mess with I will make arrangements with you to repair it.

thanks jeff

thank you tim. If I need any help I will give you a shout. Got a manual in the mail for this tractor. Would be nice to save this one, it is the first year with all the options but a block heater if i remember correctly.

Thank you,
Jeff

Hi tim.
I have been looking over how to do this steering valve adjustment. My book says I need some kind of special stop and to install something that holds the operating collar .030 in. Then i can make my adjustments with a dial indicator. I noticed this tool on ebay for 75 for making these adjustments. Looks different then the one you have in the pictures below and i do not see any stops tho. Would i be able to make a plate that fits on the column similar to yours to make these adjustments? would i need to make some set screws to hold the collar in .030?
Were do you like? I am in western ohio.

Thank you,
Jeff

There are a few different style tools I like this one the best,, I'm East of Lancaster Ohio 20 miles. These can be ornery to adjust for a first timer..

you are about 2 hours from me. I am going to give it a try. The worst cast the unit still dose not work. You would not happen to have any pictures of both sides of that plate? Appears to me to just be flat.
thanks,jeff

Actually the worst that can happen is blowing the casting apart..not trying to scare you buy it can happen, a young guy at the local dealersip had it to happen last year...

It will cost less to ship the steering valve to TimS and have it returned factory fresh. Than it will cost you to tinker with it yourself.

that would be different. One thing that has me a little concerned is the valve body/casting is not painted and everything else under the dash is still green. I think some one may have already had it out at some time, so who knows what i mite find.
