John Deere 4240 Shifter not working

The Shifter will only work in Reverse or forward when adjusting linkage. So to be more clear, you can operate tractor in 4 reverse gears, but the forwards speeds do NOT work, a linkage adjustment im sure ?

You say 4 reverse gears, so I assume you have the powershift transmission. I've been thru the same problem with our 4240 (4 post ROPS), adjustment is not difficult, but you will need the service manual. It will also help to have a second person so that you don't have to keep crawling out and getting onto the tractor to see if you have it right. As to the service manual, I bought an electronic copy on line, $50 or $60 and keep it on a memory stick, when I need to work on the tractor I find the page or two that I need, print it out and take it to the shop with me. Who cares if it gets dirty

Hi and thanks for reply, yes , powershift, and funny because last night I was telling my farm friend it might take two people to make this easier to adjust. We do have the service manual. Thanks so much for confirming diagnosis. I'll let ya know once adjusted.

Yes, get a second person, betting on the shifter in the cab. There is the piece that changes forward to reverse in the cab that gets worn out. I did one years ago for a guy that HAD to feed cattle the next morning with this tractor. I was able to weld up and grind the part back to operating. By watching the external linkage while somebody operates the shifter in the cab you will see that it isn't moving the external linkage on the side on the transmission. Also you could check by running the tractor with the clutch disengaged and with somebody in the seat manually shift it externally and see if you have forward gears.

I second what used red MN said. Have seen this several times. Loose or worn SGB rubber mount doughnuts? Plus, may have worn shift linkage.
