John Deere 435

On the same track as my earlier post about 2 stroke diesel tractors, one of the books I got a book for Christmas is the "John Deere Tractor Data Book".
What's the story on the 435? See where only 4625 were made which would mean they are fairly rare?
 
Short story: JD wanted a diesel tractor in the small utility market without spending a lot of R&D and without exposing the NG program. Simple solution was to insert the 2-53 into a 430 chassis therefor preserving the 2 cylinder identity. I know a guy that had one and sold it for $9,000 5 years ago.
 
I had two, sold one. kick myself every time I've thought about it since. The 435 I kept is my pride and joy.
The 435 is very female and snarly but can be understood and coaxed into a lot of fun.
 
I just restored this one for a customer last winter. It is one of a few to have the taller rear wheel package

The oval muffler is a must have to avoid going deaf.
The governor cover is missing from that tractor .
 
I checked into that and unless Im mistaken they didn't put the governor covers on till after a certain serial number

Not exactly but there is a serial break for different type governor guard

Sorry - just an interesting subject and more questions.
How were they (435's) for cold starting - did they have glow plugs ,manifold heater, ether injection or just a good, heavy battery/starter?
Were they any more prone to carbon build-up than 4 cycle diesels?
Who were they made to main target in the market? Noticed IH 230/240 was gas, maybe Case 300B w/Continental diesel, Allis D-12 was gas, maybe Ford Dexta w/ Perkins and the Massey 50 w/Perkins was larger and so the Gen/II JD-1010 was later made to compete with it?
 
That was one of the main complaints with these is that anything below 40 degrees made them start hard. No glow plugs, No manifold heater but some farmers would rig a either injection on them to aid cold weather starting
 

A higher percentage 435's survived in Canada than in the American South. A coolant heater in the north was considered normal and was used before starting. The southerns beat the engine with ether. or broke the front axle casting by jerking with a tow chain.
Most owners and operators were proud of not needing to read an operators manual because they knew everything.These were the same owners of two stroke engines with plugged exhaust ports and scuffed rings/sleeves.A low ash SF-2 single grade oil is mandatory.
No insult intended but how does a machine get restored without consulting with the parts book and service manual?
Detroit Diesel much improved the 53 series with the "N" upgrade from the "S" series .
21 to 1 compression pistons/sleeves instead of 17 to 1. Superior spray pattern N or C series injectors. Stronger valve and cam follower springs. A blower seal upgrade.
Of course a group 31 battery and properly connected cables help too. My 435 will start in 2-3 turns at freezing temps and after half a dozen turns at 20F.

Nope but I hope your memory hasn't faded as much as mine has in the last 15-20 yrs :wink:
 
Dad has two of them. One is a 59 and the other is a 60. Both start hard. We have not done any engine work on them yet. Difficult to find some OEM parts.
 

Parts person at the Detroit Diesel counter stood there with the straight face and told me that there were NO parts for the 2-53.
Told him fine. I'd take two pistons and sleeves for a 3-53, two rod bearings for a 3-53, blower seals for a 3-53, two injectors for a 3-53 etc etc etc.
