John Deere 4430 injection pump

Hi I have a john deere 4430 that smokes blue/gray and wet stacks on the exhaust especially in the cold weather. When working it hard it gets better but as soon as you idle it down it starts smoking. It is normal for the old deers to smoke but the smoke seems excessive. I replaced the injectors and it seemed to help slightly but it still seems to smoke and wet stack. Engine is out of a 7700 combine. Engine has around 5000hrs but it did sit and not start up very often for awhile.

Can injection pump cause this. Engine seems to be running rich unless your pulling it hard.

I'll suggest to check injection pump timing. It's possible injectors aren't quite right. In today's parts world "new" doesn't always indicate "correct". How many hours has engine been ""operated under a load"" since it was installed in tractor?

Thanks for the reply's. I purchased tractor with blown engine. I put 100hrs on disk/cultivator this fall. Other than that it mostly pulls haybine/ baler /bale processor/ manure spreader/ hay hauler. I put 665hrs on engine since installation. Cylinders 1 and 6 were wet but seemed to dry up better when new injectors installed at about 400hrs or so. Engine always appeared to be firing on all 6 cylinders. But rain cap gets wet and drips onto hood when weather is cold. I got engine for free knowing it has been overheated once so I took a risk.

Any diesel slobber means cylinder compression heat is on the low side, and injectors/pump service won't help. Get the compression up higher is the answer. Diesels run MUCH cooler exhaust temp at light load than gas engines do, and will stop the slobber when a heavy load is on engine. Diesels will RUN with 250/275 PSI compression, but DON'T start well when that low. 350/450 PSI is what helps stop the exhaust dripping when cold. A HOTTER thermostat is a good idea too.

I think if it's ran too hot, it will collops the oil rings.

If it doesn't run hot enough it will slobber wet stack and sometimes smoke check how hot it is running with a portable thermometer on the side of head and each exhaust runner

Thanks for the replies. I could check block temp to make sure thermostat is working. Engine will probably need a rebuild one day. It doesn't seem like diesels like idling for really long periods of time. They could get all carboned up. Some are probably worse than others for this. A working engine will probably last longer than an idling engine for diesels.

Yes exactly true.
What helps too is high idling at around 1000-1200 RPM anytime it's just sitting and running. Helps keep the EGT's up, thus reducing carbon. Hence they have a high idle on diesel trucks since so idling EGT's stay higher, reducing junk in the exhaust system.
