John Deere 4440 Instrument Panel Ground

I replaced the circuit board under the gauges in the 4440 and reinstalled the instrument cluster. Once plugged in, I can turn the lights on and the lights in the gauge console backlight the gauges, but the gauges are not active at all. All senders are plugged in and the bulkhead connector was cleaned and reconnected. Apparently I am getting a ground to the instrument panel since the gauge backlights work. Where are the gauges grounded? I have gone through the technical manual and cannot seem to find it.
 
Are you able to view the electrical schematic in the tech manual? Some manuals do not include a schematic and a separate manual is required. You need that schematic to determine the circuits for the gauges and get in there with a multimeter and check for continuity both hot and ground for the gauges. You're looking for an open circuit.
 
Top wire should be black ground G terminal in the 11 pin connector. It should go to the same single point as the tach and the lighter but I’ve never gotten that far down the replacing ground path any accessible ground bolt would do if it’s not super easy to find where the wire goes especially for testing. I assume you put all the copper washers back on?

Backlites and gauges share the same ground (Pin "G", as the other poster said), since those lights work I don't think you have a ground issue

Gauge POWER is Pin "F", which should have battery voltage to it with the key switch "ON".
 
Update. I was able to get most of the gauges to respond. Voltmeter gauge was bad, so I replaced it. Fuel, oil pressure and temperature seem to be working properly. New volt meter works fine when testing it, but will not respond. For example, when I turn the key to on, it does nothing. Wiring is all original but when I look at the schematic, it I see the voltmeter should be getting power to C on the plug. How does the gauge read voltage from the alternator? I see #23 on the bulkhead goes to the alternator and then goes to the key switch. How does that work? Am I correct on the key switch? A=alternator, B=battery, I=ignition, S=starter, G=ground

Not a 100% sure on this but the volt meter is probably not getting a reading from the alternator. It is just reading system voltage from the power circuits to the ignition switch which terminal G contacts when the switch is in the on position. Common for volt meters to just read system voltage in many applications. So my assumption is that G on the switch is "Gauge" power, not ground. So if C terminal is not getting power with the key on you will have to find out why, bad switch, bad connection ect. If I was doing this I would use my test light which utilizes an incandescent bulb. I would connect its lead to a battery power source a then touch the probe to terminal C at the cluster and see if the voltage gauge reacts. And the do the same at the G terminal at the switch. If both those points make the volt meter register then the connection to W31 at the switch is bad or the switch itself. If probing C activates the gauge but G at the switch does not then there is a problem in the W31 wire. Using the test light in this manner avoids throwing power to something with a jumper wire with some amps behind it to a somewhat unknown circuit. I know the test light blb will carry enough current to activate the gauge. The wire (#23) running out to the alternator is to power the excite circuit in the regulator for the alt. to start charging. The "A" terminal on the switch is "Accessories" it activates the "Sound-Gard Body Relay" seen at the upper left.
Edit: Sorry about the incorrect info. I should have added this disclaimer last night. My answers relied heavily on the OP description of the use of pin C on the cluster, which he said needed power. Having access to the diagram wore out added in reply 8 would have shown this is incorrect.

I suggest to check/clean connections on bulkhead on RH side of firewall. Wiring has a ground connection(item 22) on RH side underneath the cab & instrument panel ground is encircled in green. As you're aware poor ground connections on electrically controlled devices causes those devices to act weird.

ALL gauges (including the Voltmeter, 6) receive power from the key switch through Terminal "F" and ground through Terminal "G" of the instrument panel connector.

Terminal "C" connects to the "G" terminal on the key switch, which supplies ground from Terminal "G" on the key switch to the cathodes of diodes (9) when the key switch is turned just past "ON" to test the transmission pressure and air filter indicator lamps (1 and 2).

If the other gauges function and the Voltmeter does NOT, that would point to a "bad" voltmeter or damaged "trace" on the meter PC board.

To answer the OP’s question correctly posed in reply 5 ..“How does the gauge read voltage from the alternator?”.. Per the diagram provided by wore out, the volt meter is reading the system voltage as I described above in reply 6 but instead off of the ignition switch terminal “IGN” In the OP’s diagram that terminal is labeled “I” As you can see that terminal powers all the gauges in the cluster. In the OP’s diagram the wire is labeled DKBL-16 and has a connection to the “Ether Aid Switch” between the ignition switch and the dash plug.
