John Deere 4630 injection pump turned up

Just bought a '77 model 4630 with 10472 hrs on it, on auction and would like to know if theres anyway to tell how much the injection pump has been turned if it has been? I know if the warranty wires are gone then its been tinkered with, just would like to know if theres anyway to tell how much. We've got multiple sound gard tractors all of which have the same model pumps and have all been turned up slightly but no more than one full turn, and they run great.

Hooking to a Dyno is the only sure way.Crank it down and watch the smoke roll.
I agree - put it on a dyno to see where you are. Those 466's with an intercooler can put out a lot of power. The challenge is to keep them from overheating when they are turned up. I ran my 4640 for years turned up 4 full turns (my JD mechanic said about 10 hp per turn). It was running around 225 on the dyno and would handle it very well if I kept the radiator clean.

Hello Josh welcome to YT! Hooking it to a dyno is about the only way. If someone had one turned up a known amount and it had nearly the same tires and wear and was weighted the same you could compare how it pulled. That is not an exact science either. You could pull the pump and have it checked, seems a little extreme. Just use it like 130 - 140 hp tractor and it will be fine. When you use it like a 150 - 175hp tractor that is when the weak spots will show up.
FYI, ABA a 4630 has a turbocharged and after-cooled 404.

I had heard those 4630's had cooling problems stock and now to complicate things turning the screw. I always though if the tractor was not enough then it was time for more tractor. Not turn the wick up. Just my thoughts and I never had a tractor to big.

The 4630 has the 404 engine stock, not the 466 unless it's been changed.

4630 has a smaller radiator than 4640's do. Yes they are definitely less tolerant to a turned up pump.
