John Deere #5 sickle mower ID

Hey guys. I lifted my grandpas #5 mower out of the weeds to restore it and get it functional again. It looks like I have all the parts except for the PTO guards and the mounting brackets that attach to the tractor...so far. I'm going to look around the farm and see if I can't find them yet. My question to the forum is I want get a manual for it. When I hopped onto ebay though to get one I discovered there was a manual for every year from what looks like 1946 to 1956. I'm guessing the OM-H10-346 is March of '46 and OM-H10-156 is January '56??? even if my date code reasoning is wrong, which manual do I pick that represents the mower I have? Are there any hints or clues I can look at to give me an idea of what year my mower is from? I have a rubber wheel and it has a place to put a cylinder on it which I take was an option? The only identifiable mark I found on it was on the very back of the wheel caster casting that attaches to the frame, there is a 5 or 6 digit number. I will get it and post it if that will help.Anyway, I hope someone can help me out on which manual to get and get this unit running.

Correct.

Reviewed the [b:654c4848f0]OPERATOR'S MANUAL No. OM-H10-346[/b:654c4848f0] on page 83.

Take a look t the diagram below.

Note the pneumatic tire wheel (Key 7) and implement tire 4.00x9 (Key 8).

Both the pneumatic tire wheel and implement tire became available in 1934.

Note the rear end hydraulic cylinder bracket (Key16) and front end of hydraulic cylinder lifting lever arm (Key 20).

Both of these brackets became available in 1945.

Since the hydraulic brackets were an option in 1945, then any operator's manual from 1945 through 1956.

If you want an operator's manual with lifting attachment parts instructions, then either operator's manual [b:654c4848f0]OM-H10-954[/b:654c4848f0] or [b:654c4848f0]OM-H10-156[/b:654c4848f0].

Those 4.00x 9 tires are usually a tire shop order anymore and costly.
Dad put the hydrauluc lift kit on our number 5 around 48 or 49. Best dam sickle mower built then then the 8,9,and 11 are next

Thankyou James.
I have a 954 manual en route. The only difference i saw from your photos to my unit is the cylinder brackets are wellded parts, not cast. I will take a closer look and see if they were home made or done by a local shop. or its was one of the first units they didnt have cast parts for.
Thank you again for the excellent write up. Il
will post some photos when i have a better camera and lighting.

Was looking, the top image showin hhydraulic lift parts, front cylinder arm is on backwards.it goes with flat edge before angle against the lift hight adjustment bolt.
Dad left the long lifting lever on,made a round ring, bored hole in lever at top to hold the latch unlocked.been several times it has been used too

Thanks for the information.

I totally restored my #5 mower a few years ago the most difficult parts to find were the PTO guards. Actually the attachment brackets were a little difficult to find.
