John Deere #5 sickle

Anyone known if a John Deere #5 sickle mower, foot peddles to lift, off a 1943 John B will mount up to a 1950 John Deere A?

I would think so.

If you want to dig deeper, you can peruse the parts catalog at the link below, there are pages and pages of drawings of the mounts for various trators.

IIRC, the front mounting frame on the mower itself changed over time and you will need to know what the specific mower in question looks like to compare it to the parts diagrams.

Dad had a No. 5 mower. Remember it had hydraulic lift. He wanted to mow with a slant dash A with lift Powertrol but no remotes. IIRC he took bracket that clamped on Powertrol rock shaft for a front mount cultivator. Ran a cable to the arm that raised cutter bar. Worked except going through waterway sometimes whole mower was in air. This was with the brackets that were maybe 3 inch diameter pipe stubs welded to angle iron that bolted to drawbar support on tractor. The mower had a fixed semi-circle and a hinged that clamped on. Google Deere No. 5 mower brackets on flea bay and you might find brackets.

They made all sorts of different mounts so the No 5 could be used on almost any tractor, but my favorite was two round
horizontal pipe stubs (hard to describe no pic handy). As far as lift best I recall they made an adapter to use a hydraulic
cylinder versus that big long lift handle but again sorry no pics handy. The real old Deeres with the foot pedal hydraulics or
the later power trol could of course be used to raise the cylinder.

So yesssssssss it can be mounted to your A and yes hydraulic lift WITH THE RIGHT ADAPTERS

The #5 mower we had mounted on a B JD had a long foot petal that bolted to the axle to raise the sickle.

Foot pedals for No 5 mower worked for 1935 JD B and then on a 1946 JD A on our farm
growing up. I liked using the foot pedal, I would think hydraulic lift would be unhandy
with the lever on the left and sickle bar on the right.

Yes.

There are two types of #5 mower drawbars used for mounting the mower on the tractor's drawbar support.

They are the [b:654c4848f0]Drawbar on Mower[/b:654c4848f0] and the [b:654c4848f0]QuikTach[/b:654c4848f0] hitch.

Take a look at the photo below.

The type of drawbar that is on the #5 mower determines what is necessary for mounting on the tractor's drawbar support.

Firts take a look at Drawbar on Mower.

Note the various holes that can be used to bolt the mower drawbar to the tractor's drawbar support.

Note the various holes on the drawbar support (Key 3).

Next take a look at the QuikTach hitch.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]EXTENSION DRAWBAR[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the left hand drawbar angle (Key 1) and right hand drawbar angle (Key 2).

Take a look at the photo below.

Both of these are necessary for mounting the QuikTach hitch to the tractor's drawbar.

We had a 46 A with power lift. Dad bought a no 5 with the quick-tach hook up and Hydrulic lift. I put a Baker Valve on the A to run the lift and we installed a drawbar frame from a 60 to use the later model quick-tach brackets. I have seem the brackets to fit the early drawbar frame but we couldnt locate any at the time. The power blocked A was a little over kill for mowing hay but did a good job. A nice late B with Rollomatic would be my choice.
