John Deere 50/520 idle

My dad had a 50 back in the day, and it always was finicky starting. You always had to have the idle all the way
down then it would start, but you would really have to slowly pamper it up, and finally get it run decent. Also at an idle, if you
needed quick acceleration it probably would die on you. I have restored a 520 a few years back, and it is the exact same way. Is
there a fix to this issue??

Had exactly the same problem with a 520 that I bought at an auction. Fought the problem for about a year so finally had the carb rebuilt and the problem was solved. Starts instantly with the throttle lever in most any position and accelerates and runs beautifully with lots of power. Not saying that is your problem, but it was mine.
