john deere 50 clutch adjustment

I have a 1956 john deere model 50 that i am having problems with the clutch. i put in new linings and cannot get it to snap in. it does work but not right. that tractor has sat for a while.. if I tighten the 3 castle nuts any tighter i can"t spin the pulley over. any sugjestions.

Sounds like you got the nuts too tight?
Try backing them all the way off, pushing and holding the handle all the way forward and tighten the nuts until they are hand tight then put about 10 ftlbs on them and try the clutch handle for snap.
