JOHN DEERE 50 IGNITION SWITCH

I recently purchased a John Deere 50 series tractor and I am trying to get it running. The previous owner rewired the tractor with a modern ignition switch and key and I am going back to the original switch. I order an ignition switch from Yesterdays tractor, the tractor is after s\n 5021480 and switch part number is AA5397R. The John Deere 50 Manuel does not cover this switch and wiring diagram so i am looking for a diagram of how to wire this switch and were the wire go. Thanks for any help.

Go to the following link and type in 50. You can download the parts catalog for free. It shows the basic wiring and assuming you still have a positive ground (You should have the braided grounding strap from the positive post to the tractor frame) then there should be a wire either to the frame or run back to this post. Depends on how much he redid when he replaced the switch.

Search for "wiring diagram" and there is a gentleman by the name of John T on this board that posted a really good diagram for the 50. He also posts alot of other good info.

Thanks for the link hojon. I am still waiting on the switch but I did get a chance to work on the tractor this weekend. My 50 tractor has two 6 volt battery and they have the positive cable going to the starter and negative of the other battery grounded to the frame. The starter seem to work hooked up this way should i change this or not. If the tractor is not a positive ground what else should be changed.

I got my ignition switch installed today and got most of the wire straitened out. I but a meter on the resister located below the switch and it is shorted out. Can i get rid of the resistor? How do I need to connect the wires and do I need to change anything else. I also switched the batteries around to a positive ground but have not tried to start the tractor I did notice that when I turned on the ignition switch the amp gauge reads a negative number. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks.

That "resistor" is basically a wound coil of iron, or cheap steel, wire, meant to give a very low resistance, so if you measure across it, and it is not open, it will show virtually 100% continuity, i.e. a short. Is this what you are seeing?

If everything is hooked up correctly, and you turn on the switch, which will send power to the coil from the battery, the ammeter will swing to the minus side, indicating a draw, which would be correct until you start the engine and it begins to send a surplus of power back towards the battery, which will swing the ammeter to the positive side.

I went out and pulled resistor of tractor and put a meter on it. It has no continuity and read an open on the resistance. So I was wonder if I change the 6volt coil if I could do away with this resistor.
