John Deere 60 Starter noise

When starting my JD 60 there a a grinding noise when you first engage the starter. Its coming from the starter gear and the flywheel before its totally engaged. I pulled the flywheel cover and all the teeth look fine and everything is tight. Is there any adjustment or whats my trouble? Thanks for any help, Ray

I had a similar problem with my b and sometimes it wouldn't engage at all. I had to sharpen the teeth on the flywheel with a die grinder to let the gears mesh better or at all in some cases. I didn't have any problem until i changed the bendix out. I might could have tried a different bendix, but i doubted that the dealer would have taken the old one back.

How long has it been sitting without running in the cold, my 60 hadnt been run in a couple months and when i went to start it the bendix wouldnt engage. So what i did was pull start it and now it seems to work fine. it could have some ice on it thats making it stick?

(quoted from post at 13:48:29 01/10/10) The starter drive "Bendix as some call it" has an over running clutch. I'll bet it bad!
Yep, me too

A good way to make sure it is the driver is to remove the cover and watch the driver while someone engages it. If the driver is bad it will come out and engage the flywheel teeth but grind internally instead of turning.

The starter driver might free up and work fine for a while or it might not. This site sells the driver for $26 and the brush kit for $9 and the switch for $9.

I had to replace all 3 of mine, I got kits from eBay for around $35 delivered with a new driver and brushes and bushings. After a good internal cleaning and the new parts my starters now work great. I also had to replace the contact block on 2 of them.
