What would a good sealant to use on gear
reduction cover without gasket on john
deere 60. Aviation sealant or form a gasket
Rtv. Thanks

This will probably start a war but.. I would and have used RTV. Have both surfaces clean of old gasket and oil free for good seal. Do not use too much on the inside edge as you do not want gobs of squeeze out to be possible to come loose inside. Won't do much damage as it is soft. Blue is fine other flavors will get the job done.

Someone posted that they made a new gasket using
Roofing felt paper, Ive always thought that to be a
good suggestion.

That was Me who made a gasket from Roofing felt paper. I applied a thin coat of grease on both sides of the felt
3 or 4 years ago & it does NOT leak anywhere.. That was on a 1944 John Deere A..

If you want it to not leak for the next 50 years use a gasket. A casting that big that is not bolted on all that well will squirm a little through expansion and contraction. A gasket can squirm a little and not leak but I have my doubts if a glue of some sort will still be flexible in 30 years or even 50 years.
