John Deere 630 Starter Nose Come

What would the metal type be on the 1959 John Deere 630 starter cone nose? It broke and now I’m trying to repair it by welding it. Doesn’t seem to be true cast, any idea? Thanks

It is almost certainly "cast iron"?

Have you had any previous experience welding cast iron, this is not a good project for a "first timer".

What welding method are you using, nickle arc welding rod? Or?

Did you preheat it?

In addition to making it weld better and less likely to crack, preheating burns off oil that may have accumulated in the casting over the years, which messes with the welding process.

Some thoughts, I'm sure others will add more!

Once you have it welded, be SURE the engine's ignition timing is correct and that the centrifugal spark advance is in good condition and is operating properly and that the flywheel ring gear doesn't have a worn/damaged area that the starter drive teeth will crawl up on and break the starter D.E. casting again!

Also, check that the starter armature shaft is not bent.

I ended up welding it with 3/32 nickel 55 electrode. Pressed the cone together with a clamp and grooved out the crack with a die grinder. Preheated to 900 degrees and welded inside and out of the cone. It seemed to weld nice and is strong. I believe the problem was from cranking the ignition repeatedly without letting the starter completely stop.

Yep that will do it.
