Just got a John Deere 660 Hay take have no manual yet where do you fill the gearbox and how do you check if its full thank you

Click the link below to go to the JD Ag publications site. Then click on Equipment Publications. Search 660 and Rakes will come up in the list of possibilities. Click on that and you can download a free copy of the operator's manual. Use the down arrow with a line under it located to the right of the manual title to download.

(quoted from post at 15:10:59 02/28/22) Gotta be a breather someplace. Work through that.

It would seem a removable breather would show as a part with a number. If there is one, it doesn't show in the parts catalog or Operator's manual (the links are in other posts).

I would expect it gets hand packed with grease at assembly and only needs checking after that, not regular greasing with a grease gun, as it appears to be a sealed gearbox. If one wanted to add some grease it could be pushed in through the hole the cap plugsor temporarily fit a zerk in the plug at the bottom and pump grease up through the bottom, with the cap off, so as not to blow the seals out. My thoughts from what I find.

I had mine all apart and replaced some bearings and seals two years ago. You have to remove the input shaft plate for access to clean and repack. I believe that the cap that is referenced is mounted on the inside and the end bearing for the input shaft sits in it. I suggest replacing the seal where the control lever goes through.

If yours is old like mine are you forget the multipurpose lube...aka 90w gear oil, and fill it with Lubriplate 105 engine rebuilding grease...its viscosity is between 140w gear oil and #2 grease and stays put. Also solves leaking rotary cutter lower shaft seals....along with a vented fill plug on those.

I think you have mis-read the lubricant used. In the first picture the symbol for the location is a grease gun. The description on the second page related to the grease gun is "John Deere Multi-Purpose Lubricant or an equivalent SAE multi-purpose grease".

Take another look at the gear case.

Note the gear case cover (Key 1).

There are probably four cap screws that secure it in place.

Remove three of the cap screws and loosen the bottom cap screw.

Rotate the cover to uncover the filler hole.

Fill the gear case to the bottom of the hole.

Hope this helps.
