John Deere 70 Governor

While plowing and discing with my 70, I noticed that when the tractor was not under load (going down a slight grade, etc., with the implement up) the engine would run wide open regardless of the throttle lever position. While under load, the tractor responds immediately when the throttle lever is retarded or advanced. I'm guessing this is a problem with the governor. Can this be corrected with a simple adjustment, or is there a bigger problem? Does anyone have advice? Thanks.

Roger, Based on the fact that the engine RPMs increase when needed regardless of throttle position, it sounds more like lingeage problems than governor internals, but one thing NOT to forget with the duplex carbs is that carb issues will often make ya think governor. Has it sat for any length of time? It"s not a big issue to pull the end off the governor and check to make sure that the weights are moving like they should...lil bit of brake cleaner on "em will clean off any stickiness.

Thanks for the reply Pete. The tractor does sit for long lengths of time. Apart from testing out with an old drag disc for 10 minutes last summer, this is the first "real" work I've done with it. I think I'll pull the end off the governor and check.
