John Deere 70 starter

Have a 55 JD 70 gas. I can't the starter to run to when i step on the pedal. I know have power to the switch on the starter but don't know the amps. Is the starter junk or do I need to replace the battery cable It did start fine a couple days before this happened. I'm stuck any ideas. Thanks

I did try that. Still didn't have anything after that.

Did you inspect the stud under the top switch? Was the switch making contact with it?

Brother-in-law's JD 50 had the same problem. Sent the starter out for repairs and the problem was the fields were bad. The rebuilder replaced the fields, bushings, starter switch and brushes. Works like a new one.

Went to start my 70 LP couple of months
ago and couldn't get any response so
cleaned the cables and finally took the
flywheel cover off and somehow the
linkage was out of adjustment and wasn't
pushing the starter button hard enough.
Lengthened the linkage and it worked
perfect. Just my experience.

Clean the positive battery terminal and cable to make sure of a good "ground".

You mentioned below that you installed a new starter switch and have power to the switch.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the terminal stud (Key 28).

The starter button may not be making contact with the terminal stud.

As [b:654c4848f0]david from kansas[/b:654c4848f0] suggested, you might consider removing the flywheel cover and adjusting the linkage.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the yoke (Key 6) and pin (Key 7).

With the yoke disconnected from the starter, push the lever down on the starter.

If the starter engages, then adjust the length on the rod (Key 4).

If the starter does not engage, then remove the starter, remove the new switch, and bench test the terminal stud.

If the starter engages, then the stud terminal may be worn.

Either replace or rotate the stud terminal until it makes contact with the new switch.

If the starter does not engage, then there are other issues.

Lug on starter that the switch contacts may be worn/burnt. Needs replaced if so. Requires dismantling starter & soldering it in. Not for amateur solderers.
