Hey mark-IA. there has been little talk or research on these tags as far as i know.
i have about 4 nice original 2 cylinder tractors that have these I.D tags on them. all identical to the above one.
i believe that they were as you suggest a tag that the dealers used for keeping track of inventory. but is it possible that they were put on at the main shipping branch
and then sent out to dealers. maybe its a dealer identification number that was assigned to them from john deere.??
I think these tags are more clues to tractor shipping destinations and dealers that we are ignoring and should pay more attention to them.
im sure one of mine is stamped Hamilton ontario which was a main shipping branch by water and rail for john deere in canada.
I think that the 2 cylinder club and green magazine should do an article on these special tags before another 10 years go by and the tags have all rotted off and are lost in time.
besides, they can only publish so many times the serial number list of years of production to the 2 cylinder models so many times that its starting to get boring in the magazines.
i hope richard of green magazine reads this and gets the hint. lets get some new articles like on this unknown tag indentification and maybe we can unlock the mysteries of some unkown.
because lets face it. it is very interesting to read in the GM and 2 cylinder club some articles that are newly discovered. eh.!!
i know off the top of my head that one of my tags is on a 620 standard and it is very carefully installed behind the tractors main jd serial plate.
another tag is on a very low houred original 420 slant steer tricycle 3 point hitch upper arm.
once i get my crop in i will get some pictures on them and repost them on here.
this is a great topic and im very interested to hear from other members.

Make sense this tractor is originally from Missouri. I?m the third owner on it. The tractor has the dealer information tag but the dealer is not in business. My tag has M-210497 I assume M is for Missouri.

I worked for a John Deere dealer in the late 70's and early 80's. Those tags were put on used equipment. I have a 36 A that was purchased at a consignment auction with the tag of the Auction company name on it.
