John Deere 790 PTO clutch problems :?:

I can hardly get my PTO in gear, it grinds the gears so bad. Clutch seems to work OK otherwise. Does the PTO have a separate clutch? Is there any adjustment I can make to engage the PTO properly?

Much thanks!

GUESSING you don't have an operator's manual?

Looks like that tractor could have a "two stage clutch" or a single-plate clutch.

If single-plate clutch PTO is not "live" and the tractor needs to be standing still with the clutch pedal to the floor to engage the PTO or it will "grind".

If "two stage clutch", depressing the clutch pedal half-way should stop tractor's movement, depressing it the rest of the way should release the second stage/"live" PTO clutch to allow the PTO lever to be engaged.

If a two-stage clutch and it's stuck or out of adjustment that would cause "grinding".

If you go to https://techpubs.deere.com/ and enter the model number you should be able to view or download the Operator's Manual for FREE or buy a copy.

Thanks! Exactly what I needed. You are correct, I don't have a manual.

Right, but remember the some of the Yanmar made JD tractors, or Yanmar made drivetrains, use the 2-stage clutch to get an independent pto.
Still, it sounds like the pto clutch needs adjusting. Get a tech manual
